Burned

The digital photography series 'Burned' is about human behaviour that changes the environment.

In early spring, I saw that one of my neighbours had illegally burned the grass next to my mother's house. The sight was so depressing that it pushed me to document it.

 

The nearby area was covered in black, and I decided to use it as a background. Glass was a natural choice as it is formed at high temperatures. It gives reflections and transparencies, allowing me to use different visual effects. The mirrored sky is meant to symbolise our consciousness.


Controlled or prescribed burning is strictly prohibited in Poland. Such a fire causes negative consequences regarding losses in flora and fauna in the natural ecosystem. This activity is unfortunately common in my country despite prohibitions and legal repercussions.

This photograph, "Burned III", won First Place and a Juror's Selection (Traer Scott) in the International Open Call for Entry "GLASS 2017" organised by New York Center for Photographic Arts (run by Patricia Gilman and Maddi Ring) and was exhibited there.
